What kinds of questions are on this IQ test?
The test mixes four question types. Together they ask for pattern spotting, word reasoning, logic and mental rotation, which are the skills most reasoning tests lean on.
- Number series (8 questions). Find the rule that links a row of numbers and give the next one. Some rules add, some multiply, and the hardest mix two rules in turn.
- Words and logic (6 questions). Complete an analogy, find the odd word out or judge which statement must be true. These need clear thinking more than a big vocabulary.
- Matrix puzzles (6 questions). A grid of shapes follows a rule across rows and down columns. One piece is missing and you pick it from six options.
- Shape rotation (5 questions). One option is the shape you were shown, only turned. The others are mirror images, so you have to turn the shape in your head.
Every question was written by us for this site. We did not copy puzzles from other tests, so you will not find the answers on a worksheet. The questions are worth 1, 2 or 3 points by difficulty, for 50 points in all.
How is the IQ estimate worked out?
Your points are corrected for lucky guesses and spread over a scale from 70 to 145. A person who guesses everything lands near the bottom, and a person who gets every question right lands at the top.
The scale is ours. It was not built from a large group of test takers, so it is a fixed table and not a true norm. That is why we call the result an estimate and show a range of ten points either way. The method page shows the exact table.
What does my IQ score mean?
On any IQ scale the average is 100. About half of people score from 90 to 109, and about two in three score from 85 to 115. Scores of 130 and above are reached by roughly two in a hundred people.
On this test, anything from about 90 to 109 is a typical result. Read the full IQ score chart to see what each range is called, and average IQ by age and country to see why the middle is fixed at 100.
Why is this IQ test free, and is it accurate?
Many sites let you finish a test and then ask for money to see the number. We do not. The result is free because the test runs in your browser and costs us almost nothing to serve.
It is a quiz, not a clinical assessment. A licensed psychologist gives a full test one on one, with more tasks and a score checked against a large sample. Our guide on whether online IQ tests are accurate explains the gap in plain words.
Tips for a fair result
- Take the test when you are rested and will not be interrupted.
- Use scratch paper for number series and rotations.
- If you are stuck, skip the question and come back at the end.
- Do not retake it right away. You will remember the patterns and the second score means less.
