Are Online IQ Tests Accurate?

By The Free IQ Test team at 1000 Ventures Last reviewed

Online IQ tests can show a rough level of reasoning, but they cannot give you a reliable IQ score. Use them for fun, and see a psychologist if you need a number you can use.

Are online IQ tests accurate?

Not in the way a clinical test is. A good online test can rank people roughly, so someone who solves the hard puzzles will usually score higher than someone who cannot. But the number it gives is an estimate with a wide margin, and there are four reasons why.

Why a free online test cannot match a clinical one

  1. No norm group. A clinical score is checked against a large sample of people of your age. Most online tests, including ours, use a table the authors made up. We say so on our method page. Some sites do not.
  2. Too few questions. A clinical test has many parts and takes hours. A quiz of 25 questions samples your reasoning only thinly, so luck matters more.
  3. No control of the setting. Noise, a small screen, a tired mind or a phone buzzing all change your score. A psychologist controls the room and watches how you work.
  4. Practice and leaks. Puzzles that appear on many sites and worksheets can be learned. Answers for popular tests are easy to find.

Why do online tests give different scores?

Each test has its own questions and its own conversion table. Nobody checks one table against another, so the same person can score 105 on one site and 125 on the next. A difference like that tells you about the sites, not about you.

Some sites also have a reason to flatter. If a test ends with an offer to buy a certificate or a full report, a higher score makes a sale more likely. Be careful with any test that makes you pay or give an email address before you see your result.

Signs of a trustworthy online IQ test

  • It says plainly that it is not a clinical test.
  • It explains how it turns answers into a score.
  • It shows the result without a paywall or an email gate.
  • It does not claim a precise score. A range is more honest than one number.
  • It does not promise to "boost your IQ" or sell a course.

We built this site to meet that list. You can check the claims on the about page, the privacy page and in the method.

What an online test is good for

It is good for curiosity, for a casual comparison with friends and for practice at pattern puzzles. It is also a light way to learn what the common question types look like. It is not good for school placement, hiring, medical questions or deciding anything about a child.

How to get an official IQ score

Book an assessment with a licensed psychologist. In many countries you can reach one through a school, a doctor or a private practice. The test is given one on one, takes a couple of hours and comes with a written report. Ask beforehand what test they use and what you will get back.

If you only want to see roughly how you handle reasoning puzzles, you can take our free IQ test and read your result on the score chart.

Curious where you land? The test has 25 questions and the result is free.
